The adidas SPEZIAL was originally released as a handball shoe in Germany back in 1979 and by the mid 1980s, had become an integral part of the terrace casual’s movement in football and beyond.
As other styles became more popular, the silhouette was forgotten and fell by the wayside until 2013 when Gary Aspden, a long-time adidas consultant, resurrected the popularity of the SPEZIAL with an exhibition at the Hoxton Gallery. The exhibition which focused on the archival history of adidas, was very well received and ultimately spurred consequent capsule collections encompassing footwear and clothing each season. In Spring/Summer 2019, Aspden highlighted the well-known adidas collector Robert Brooks, whose personal collection includes running trainers such as the Denver and was the focal point for the design of the Silverbirch SPZL.
This season, adidas SPEZIAL takes inspiration from the look and lineage of the British Soul scenes. There is a thread that runs from the Northern Soul phenomenon of the 1970s through the early House/Jazz Fusion of the 80s through Acid Jazz in the 90s that has left an unshakable imprint and legacy.
The apparel for this collection includes the boxy-fit Holbeck jacket in Spice Yellow that is rain proof and features a contrast inside binding. There’s also new T-shirt style called the Hartcliffe, along with the Heswall shorts and a new iteration of the Mod Trefoil socks – all featuring the recognizable adidas SPEZIAL branding.
In terms of footwear, the SS20 SPEZIAL selection consists of three styles, blending adidas’ iconic aesthetic with the eye for detail and authenticity now synonymous with the SPEZIAL range. The Ashurst SPZL – based on the adidas Sydney from the City Running Series – revives a hard-to-find shoe from the adidas archive and gives people the chance to finally get their hands on the vintage silhouette. The Lotherton SPZL takes the much loved Ardwick SPZL silhouette from the very first SPEZIAL collection in 2014 and creates a completely new hybrid using the vintage adidas Florida colourway. The footwear selection also includes the Zurro SPZL, whose upper pattern is based on the vintage adidas Azzurro combined with the striped midsole of an ultra rare version of the adidas Montreal 76.
