The Roswell Rayguns is a fictional basketball team from the late 1970s created by Nike in a set of TV commercials from 2002. The New Mexico franchise was struggling and had a very poor record of 5-79 in the ABA league. This all changed when the team’s coach announced that they had signed new players.
The Rayguns’ hopes were reignited by a time traveling funk ship with superstar players from the early 2000s. The franchise made key trades for Vince Carter (“Dr. Funk”), Baron Davis (“The Numbers Runner”), Paul Pierce (“The Shot Caller”), Jerry Stackhouse (“The Hustler”) and Jermaine O’Neill (“The Undisco Kid”) and the rest is history. The super team of modern All-Stars lead by Dr. Funk dominated the league with their high-tech Nike Shox and Zoom Turbine sneakers creating a memorable basketball universe that lives on to this day.
Nike is now bringing back nostalgia with a Roswell Rayguns collection consisting of the squad’s jersey and shorts along with socks, cap and a basketball.
The upcoming drop also includes a Nike Air Force 1 executed in white leather and complemented with orange overlays on the heel in a satin finish. The Raygun alien-coloured basketball head logo is placed on the lateral heel while hits of amarillo land on the Swoosh borders and heel panels. A “Rayguns” branded left insole and a black rubber outsole completes the design.
