Japan-based MonkeyTime have teamed up with Australian sneaker store Highs and Lows and ASICS Tiger to deliver another inspiring collaboration influenced by traditional Japanese arts.
The Gel-Lyte V "Ichimatsu", features a unique checkerboard pattern that was trademarked by the great Sanogawa Ichimatsu, a kabuki actor from the 18th century who would wear the pattern on his costumes. Throughout centuries, the geometric motif was used across Japanese architecture, fashion, interior design and even kimonos. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics official logo was also inspired by the Ichimatsu pattern.
From the outside, the shoe looks fairly inconspicuous featuring a monotone blend of black and grey nubuck and suede. The most interesting part however, is the black and white checkerboard patterned that is revealed on the insoles, the translucent outsole and also the laces. The classic Gel Lyte III "side net" also makes an appearance in white, something you don't see on a Gel-Lyte V very often.
Releasing at The Good Life on April 14th 2018
